Manager development that sticks

Small steps, dizzying heights.

Cairnsetter turns 1-on-1s and course outcomes into one small daily habit in Microsoft Teams and Slack. No new app, no new login: just the next stone, every working day.

Founding Partner Pilot: 5 places for Scottish organisations and training providers.

Why cairns?

In the Scottish hills, the way isn't marked by signs. It's marked by cairns.

Built stone by stone, each one helps the next walker find the path, even when the haar comes down. Cairnsetter does the same at work: one small, specific habit a day, so people keep their way long after the 1-on-1 or the course has ended.

The problem

At work, the haar comes down fast.

Organisations invest in 1-on-1s and development programmes, then lose the thread in the week that follows.

Training fades within days

People leave a course with good intentions and no daily prompt to practise.

1-on-1 actions are lost by Friday

Agreed next steps sit in a notebook while the week takes over.

L&D can't show what changed

Completion rates don't prove that anyone behaves differently at work.

Another app nobody opens

New platforms mean new logins, and adoption fades with them.

How it works

Three stones, every day.

Log the 1-on-1, or add course outcomes

A manager adds notes in Teams or Slack, or a training provider adds a course's learning outcomes. Managers' notes stay private.

Cairnsetter turns it into small habits

One to three specific actions, each under ten minutes. Managers choose how many prompts a week, and for how many weeks.

One tap, and the streak grows

A habit each morning, a reflection each evening, and a weekly coaching nudge so the manager can back it up.

No new app.
No new login.

✓ Lives in Microsoft Teams and Slack✓ Nothing for staff to install✓ One streak per person across both✓ Managers' notes stay private

For leaders and L&D

See behaviour change, not just course completion.

  • Progress by person, team and learning outcome
  • Before-and-after ratings from participants and managers
  • A cohort impact report at the end of every programme
  • A weekly team summary for managers, right in chat

Example: progress by learning outcome

Gives clear, specific feedback2.6 → 3.9
Flags risks early2.9 → 4.1
Runs meetings to a clear decision3.1 → 3.8

Illustrative example. Ratings are 1 to 5, start of programme → week 8; bars show habit practice rate.

Questions

Good to know

What do staff need to install?

Nothing. Cairnsetter arrives as messages in Microsoft Teams or Slack. Your IT team approves the app once, and everyone else just receives their daily habit.

Does the employee see the manager's notes?

No. Managers' notes stay private. Employees only see the habits Cairnsetter writes from them, and their own reflections stay private to them.

How long does it take to set up a cohort?

Usually under half an hour for an L&D admin: confirm dates, choose how participants are matched to outcomes, and enrol people from a Teams group, Slack channel or spreadsheet.

Who decides how often people get prompts?

Managers choose how many prompts a week (from one to every weekday) and for how many weeks, with organisation-wide defaults set by an admin.

How is our data handled?

Each organisation's data is kept separate, and we'll provide a data processing agreement before any pilot starts. Ask us for our security summary.
